Matt serves as a faculty research associate at Oregon State University. He is working with Keith Jayawickrama to selectively breed Douglas-fir for traits amenable for biofuel use while retaining wood value for traditional uses.

He receive a doctorate in environmental science from Oregon State University studying the effects of fire and anthropogenic disturbance on fungal communities at Crater Lake National Park. Matt received a Master of Science degree from Oregon State University studying the host and habitat associations of winter chanterelles.
