Dr. Cavalieri serves as Project Director for NARA. Additionally, he is currently Associate Vice President for Alternative Energy and Professor of Biological Systems Engineering at Washington State University. He is a Registered Professional Engineer, State of Washington. He served two terms on the Department of Energy’s Biomass Research and Development Technical Advisory Committee, serves on the Board of Directors of the Washington State University Research Foundation and as the Assistant Director of the Western Sun Grant Center. He has served on the Board of the Washington Technology Center and as the Chair of the Western Association of Agricultural Experiment Station Directors. Previous to his current position, he served as Associate Dean for Research in the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences and as Director of the Agricultural Research Center. Previous to that he served as Chair, Biological Systems Engineering Department at Washington State University. Dr. Cavalieri retired from the U.S Navy Reserve in 1993 with the rank of Commander after a career in Naval Aviation.

Dr. Cavalieri’s primary area of research specialization has been in process engineering with particular emphasis on process kinetics, biosensors, instrumentation, and controls. He has published more than 100 refereed and proceedings articles. Dr. Cavalieri is a Fellow of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers and a Senior Member the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He received the R.M. Wade Award for Excellence in Teaching in 1989. Dr. Cavalieri studied chemical engineering at the University of California at Berkeley prior to entry into the U. S. Navy and received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Idaho in 1975 on a Navy scholarship. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Washington State University in 1985, where he studied mineral catalyzed chemical kinetics in oil shale char combustion and gasification.
