Expertise in organizational adoption of new technologies makes Dr. Timothy Smith a valuable addition to the Northwest Advanced Renewables Alliance. He is director of the NorthStar Initiative for Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment. He also serves as associate professor of environmental sciences, policy and management and bioproducts and biosystems engineering at UM.

Dr. Smith’s research interests focus on organization adoption of energy efficiency, renewable energy and other environmental performance enhancing technologies; private governance of sustainability; and the disclosure and effectiveness of life cycle assessment information.

Prior to his current position, Dr. Smith served as director of UM’s Forest Products Management Development Institute; visiting professor in sustainable development at the INCAE Business School in Costa Rica; president and founder of Marketing Resource ±Management LLC in St. Paul, Minn.; and as administrator/project manager for GTE Wireless in Nashville, Tenn.

He holds an MBA from the Pennsylvania State University Smeal School of Business and a Ph.D. in forest resources, also from Penn State.
